Immigrants are vital economic contributors to the United States. The National Immigration Forum looks at the role of immigrants in the U.S. economy in a seven-part series of fact sheets. The fourth fact sheet, “Immigrants as Economic Contributions: Immigrant Entrepreneurs,” cites U.S. Census data, The Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurship, The National Foundation for American Policy and existing research that shows high entrepreneurialism among immigrants of all backgrounds and its positive local impact.

"The H-4 Visa Classification: Attracting and Maintaining Global Talent" provides an overview of the H-4 Visa and a profile of current recipients. It explains the eligibility of certain H-4 spouses to work and the benefits of allowing them to do so. The H-4 visa category is for the spouses and unmarried children under 21 of other H temporary nonimmigrant workers, including H-1B specialty workers. In 2017, there were more than 136,000 H-4 visas issued-86 percent to family members of workers from India. Beginning in 2015, H-4 spouses of certain H-1B workers were given the right to work.

This issue brief examines the main features of the H-1B temporary worker program, including the background of visa holders, the types of companies they work for, and latest trends in the operation of the program. The report notes that the H-1B program has been growing, with much of the growth due to the fact that there is a long wait for employment-based green cards, particularly for Indian nationals. H-1B visa holders may renew their temporary visas until a green card is available.

Beyond DACA - Defying Employer Sanctions Through Civil Disobedience

Described as a working draft, this paper lays out the case for employers to engage in civil disobedience by continuing to employ Dreamers, i.e. recipients of DACA, if and when their employment authorization expires (either because legal challenges to the revocation of DACA fail and/or Congress fails to find a legislative solution to the problem). The author is Bill Ong Hing, Professor of Law and Migration Studies at the University of San Francisco. Hing notes that hundreds of companies have already gone on record in support of the Dreamer cause.

While the characteristics of monolingual, bilingual, or dual language classrooms for young children are widely understood and well covered in the educational literature, there appears to be an information void regarding the "superdiverse" classroom, defined by this study as one "with at least five language groups represented, and without a critical mass of any one language group in a classroom that would make dual-language/bilingual instruction feasible." Too often in these settings, the importance of primary language skills to English language development is overlooked or discounted.

Evaluation activities and influences at the intersection of medical and social services

Social determinants of health (SDH) have long influenced health-care based strategies; however, there has been little to no research regarding the impacts these SDH focused interventions have in clinical settings. In order to better understand this arena, a study comprised of 30 interviews with researchers was conducted, in order to uncover inside details regarding agencies bridging health and social service delivery. This study points out a clear lack of research on interventions which focus on the impact that programs which integrate social and medical care delivery can have on clients.

The article discusses obstacles and eligibility requirements that may prevent immigrant clients from obtaining visas or immigration relief (e.g. limited financial means).
